The garage's design employed a unique technique to meet project requirements and minimize its impact during construction, given its strategic location within the hospital's fabric.
The excavation was studied using two construction methodologies, distinguished by the following different excavation techniques employed:
Open-air excavation of the garage surface, from the current level of Largo Rossana Benzi up to the intrados of the 4th floor and the exit ramp onto Via Benedetto XV;
Blind excavation (top-down method) limited to the car park, from the underside of the 4th slab down to the bottom of the excavation.
The application of the covered excavation methodology (topdown) involved the progress of the works with excavation extended over the entire area, after the construction of horizontal structures, consisting of the floors on the 4th and 2nd floors of the car park, which served as a contrast to the "excavation walls".
Once the excavation was completed and the foundation slab was created, the perimeter counter-walls were built upwards, with the dual function of supporting the floors and counteracting possible water ingress.
Considering the size of the excavated area and the extent of the entrance and exit ramps to the car park, the management of interferences with underground utilities was particularly complex.
During both the Final and Executive Design phases, all necessary utility relocations were studied, resulting in the creation of a complex system of new cable ducts and service tunnels agreed upon with the relevant utility providers.
