Definitive MEP Design
The project involves the redevelopment of Piazza Massena through a modification of the traffic scheme (or road network), which entails the removal of the currently present traffic light system. This system will be replaced by a road roundabout, designed to manage the intersection between Corso Perrone and Via Cornigliano, Via Ansaldo, and Via Coronata, while also including the suppression of the route leading from Via Coronata toward the residential area of Cornigliano.
Concurrently with the rearrangement of the traffic scheme, the project plans to extend the adjacent pedestrian and cycle paths constructed along Via Cornigliano and to transform the central portion of Piazza Massena into an entirely pedestrian and gathering area.
Furthermore, the project includes the redistribution of the services currently present in the area, such as taxi ranks, car and motorcycle parking, freight parking (or commercial vehicle parking), bus stops, and AMIU points (waste collection facilities) for selective waste collection.
The new roundabout will have an external diameter of 32 meters, thus falling into the category of compact roundabouts, which have a diameter between 25 and 40 meters. The selection of this type of roundabout was dictated by the need to allow the transit of 18-meter articulated buses and potentially, in the future, 24-meter vehicles on the main routes.
The central island of the roundabout has a 12-meter diameter, where an installation will be placed. This installation is designed based on the winning idea of the competition announced by the corporation Società 'Per Cornigliano' and addressed to students of the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the University of Genoa.
