Location: Genoa Campi

Year: 2019

Client: Siag Srl

Services: Technical Consultant

The firm served as a structural and mitigation engineering consultant for the demolition of piers 10 and 11 of the Morandi Viaduct on June 28, 2019, on behalf of the explosives firm SIAG srl, subcontracted by Fratelli Omini spa, ATI Demolitori.

The demolition was carried out by drilling approximately 500 holes filled with explosives on the lower base of the antennas and on the eight arms that supported the deck.

The study focused on determining the areas where the holes should be made and the construction details of the latter based on the mesh to be followed and the thickness of the element to be drilled.

Furthermore, dust mitigation was managed with the introduction of a new system developed together with Siag, which consists of placing water tanks at the base of the piers and on the deck, also containing explosive charges.

These, detonated simultaneously with the explosion of the piles, created a natural rain effect that allowed for a substantial reduction in dust.

In addition to this system, water bags were fixed at the holes. Fog cannons and fire hoses, in addition to providing additional water flow during the explosion, allowed the ground to be pre-wetted, thus also reducing the spread of dust.

Dust barriers and nets were placed around the blast site to protect any fragments that might have been detached during the demolition.
